The landscape of e-commerce automation is shifting from static rule-based triggers to autonomous systems capable of executing complex business tasks. As companies scramble to integrate generative AI into their core offerings, Klaviyo has made a decisive move to secure its position by acquiring Agency, a three-year-old AI startup specializing in customer success solutions.
The Strategic Acquisition of Agency
Agency, founded by serial entrepreneur Elias Torres, brings a specialized focus on AI-driven customer success to Klaviyo’s established marketing automation platform. While the financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed, the move marks a significant consolidation of talent and technology. Prior to this acquisition, Agency had successfully raised $32 million in capital, backed by prominent venture capital firms including Sequoia, Menlo Ventures, and Felicis. By acquiring a startup already vetted by top-tier investors, Klaviyo effectively bypasses the typical trial-and-error phase of internal AI development, integrating a proven team of 25 specialists directly into its operations.
This acquisition is rooted in a long-standing professional relationship between Klaviyo CEO Andrew Bialecki and Elias Torres. Their history dates back to 2010 at Performable, where Torres mentored Bialecki. This partnership evolved over a decade, with Torres serving as an early angel investor in Klaviyo in 2015. The current integration of Agency into Klaviyo is the culmination of this decade-long professional bond, now focused on scaling AI-driven customer support and marketing capabilities.
Data as the Competitive Moat
In the race to build effective AI agents—systems that understand user intent and autonomously execute tasks—the primary differentiator is no longer just the underlying model, but the depth of proprietary data. Despite recent downward pressure on Klaviyo’s stock price, Bialecki and Torres are betting that the company’s massive repository of historical e-commerce data provides a distinct advantage over competitors like Decagon or Sierra. By leveraging years of transactional and behavioral data, Klaviyo aims to train agents that are more context-aware and effective at managing complex e-commerce workflows than generic AI solutions.
Under the new organizational structure, Elias Torres has been appointed as Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Klaviyo, where he will lead the integration of Agency’s technology. The immediate focus is on enhancing two core pillars: Composer, which automates the creation of marketing campaigns, and the Customer Agent, which handles post-purchase support tasks such as order tracking and returns. With 200,000 businesses currently using the platform, Bialecki has set an ambitious roadmap to integrate these AI capabilities across the existing user base, with plans to scale the technology to millions of businesses in the coming years.
The true measure of success for this integration will be the transition of AI agents from simple conversational chatbots to autonomous engines that can execute end-to-end business workflows.
