Implementation speed has hit an all-time high, but the 'intent' behind the code—the architectural reasoning and the business constraints—is evaporating. In this new era of LLM-driven development, the team’s failure to maintain the system's essence is no longer just a minor annoyance; it is a structural debt that threatens the long-term health of the entire software ecosystem.

The Tri-System Theory and the Three Debts

Recent research into LLM-integrated workflows suggests that we are accumulating debt across three distinct dimensions. First, there is the classic technical debt, where implementation choices today limit the flexibility of tomorrow. Second, we face cognitive debt, where the team’s shared understanding of the system fails to keep pace with the sheer volume of AI-generated code, leading to a degradation in collective reasoning. Finally, there is intent debt—a state where the system’s goals, constraints, and business logic are not explicitly recorded, making it nearly impossible for humans or AI agents to evolve the system safely. These three debts erode the system from the code, the people, and the artifacts respectively.

Expectations regarding legacy modernization must also be recalibrated. While there is a prevailing hope that AI agents will act as a magic wand for refactoring decades-old codebases, this is largely overestimated. AI is not yet a silver bullet for architectural transformation. However, where LLMs excel is in code analysis—helping developers understand the 'why' behind complex, undocumented legacy systems. As for the future of programming languages, the debate is ongoing. Some are experimenting with LLM-native languages, while others argue that strict, type-safe languages like TypeScript or Rust provide the necessary constraints for LLMs to reason more effectively. Regardless of the syntax, the engineer’s role remains constant: acting as the guardian of the domain-driven design.
