We all know AI is booming, but there's a hidden cost: the massive amount of power and water these giant data centers gulp down. It's led to a lot of frustration over rising electricity bills and environmental damage in local communities.
To address this, the New York State Legislature just passed a bill to ban the construction of new large data centers for one year. This is the first time the state has taken such a sweeping measure. Once Governor Kathy Hochul signs it, the ban becomes law. Lawmakers say they simply need time to properly analyze how these facilities impact the environment and energy prices. It looks like the era of building AI infrastructure at any cost is finally meeting some regulatory reality.
