OpenAI announced via an official release note that it is ending the automatic switching feature from instant models to reasoning models for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users worldwide. Consequently, users must now directly select options from the model picker to give ChatGPT more thinking or reasoning time. However, ChatGPT may still automatically switch models if safety reasons arise.

Along with this update, the higher intelligence setting previously offered in the web version has also been excluded from these subscription plans. Instead, users must directly balance task speed and reasoning effort through the model picker located in the web composer or at the top of iOS and Android conversations. Additionally, users can toggle on or off the feature in General > Settings that automatically switches instant models to the Medium stage for higher reasoning when needed.
