Google is attempting to close this gap by decentralizing its marketing efforts through the Google University Student Ambassador program. From Technical Tool to Lifestyle Partner
What makes this second generation of ambassadors distinct is the deliberate pivot away from technical expertise. The roster is intentionally diverse, featuring students from departments such as Culture and Entertainment, Physical Education, Digital Content, Art Engineering, Industrial Security, Mechanical Engineering, and Sociology. This shift reveals a critical insight into the current state of AI: the next growth phase depends on non-experts who can translate technical power into emotional and social value.
For example, a team from Kyung Hee University, comprising students from the Culture and Entertainment, Physical Education, and Digital Content departments, is focusing on the everyday value of Gemini for humanities and arts majors. Their goal is to identify the exact moments of friction in a non-tech student's day where an AI can intervene not as a replacement for thought, but as a catalyst for it. This is a move away from the traditional AI narrative of efficiency and toward a narrative of accessibility.
Similarly, a team from Chung-Ang University is treating the AI adoption process as a UX design challenge. By including students from Art Engineering and Industrial Security, they are positioning themselves as designers who aim to move the user's cursor back to the login button. Their strategy defines Gemini not as a software product, but as a partner that expands the boundaries of a user's thinking. This approach acknowledges a psychological barrier: many students have closed the AI window because they felt the tool was too clinical or intimidating. By framing AI as a partner for brainstorming rather than a machine for answers, they are attempting to lower the psychological entry barrier.
Ajou University's team is pushing this further with a playground strategy. Instead of using standardized promotional methods, they are treating the campus as a space for experimentation. By sharing actual cases of how AI can expand creative ideas—rather than just searching for information—they are attempting to shift the perception of Gemini from a search engine replacement to a creative sandbox. When a sociology or art student defines a use case for fridge management or career mapping, it carries more social currency with their peers than a corporate white paper on LLM capabilities. This strategic deployment of non-majors suggests that Google views the democratization of AI as a cultural problem rather than a technical one.
