Jacob Bank, the founder and CEO of Relay, is returning to Google to take on the role of Vice President of Product for Google Chrome.
Bank is not a stranger to the Google ecosystem. He first joined the company in 2015 following Google's acquisition of the scheduling app Timeful. Over the following years, he served as the product lead for Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Chat, effectively mastering the architecture of Google's productivity suite. In his new capacity, Bank will simultaneously lead Chrome's product team and its Developer Relations (DevRel) team. This dual mandate suggests a coordinated effort to align the browser's internal product roadmap with the needs of the external developer community building the next generation of AI tools.
Relay's primary value proposition focused on automating repetitive cognitive tasks, such as drafting documents, editing copy, and managing project pipelines. By absorbing the leadership and vision behind Relay, Google is not simply adding a few features to Chrome; it is importing a philosophy of autonomous workflow execution directly into the interface where billions of users already spend their working hours.
From Connectors to Executors: The Browser as the New OS
The strategic pivot here is the move from a connector-based model to an execution-based model. For a decade, the automation market has been dominated by the connector approach, where a tool like Zapier acts as a bridge between App A and App B via APIs. This represents a broader trend of platform internalization.
