Now, the introduction of identity verification signals that the industry is prioritizing security and accountability over sheer user acquisition numbers.
The Mechanics of Identity Verification via Persona
Anthropic has begun rolling out a verification process for a segment of its user base, integrating a third-party identity orchestration platform called Persona. The process is designed to be a swift, digital checkpoint that ensures the person behind the screen is a unique, verifiable human being. When triggered, the system prompts users to upload a high-resolution photograph of a government-issued ID, such as a driver's license or a national identity card. To prevent the use of stolen images or static photos, the system also requires a real-time selfie to match the user's face against the ID provided.
Anthropic claims the entire sequence is optimized to take less than five minutes. However, the system is uncompromising. Blurry images, expired documents, or failed biometric matches result in immediate verification failure. The stakes are high for the user, as repeated failures or a flat refusal to comply with the request can lead to the permanent suspension of the account. While the company asserts that this data is used exclusively for identity confirmation and not for training its models, the requirement transforms the act of using an AI assistant into a formal registration process akin to opening a bank account.
Curbing the Abuse of Mass Account Generation
This move is a direct response to the systemic vulnerability of email-based registration. Until now, a single malicious actor could create dozens, or even hundreds, of accounts using temporary email services or automated scripts.
